Summary

Ordering users, especially novice users, struggle to find products across suppliers. We force ordering users to make decisions about what supplier to choose before the product, increasing the steps needed to place an order and reducing effective choice. Adding a "Search by Product" tab allows users to powerfully browse and search across all available supplier catalogs.

Goals

Increase user activation

Increase facility-level, 7-day activation from 55% to 65%. In other words, we want to get a user from a new facility to complete their 1st order within the first 7 days after account creation.

Watching User Sessions

I identified problems from 50 new user sessions that I watched via glassbox who did not complete their first order. After categorizing the problems, users being unable to find products was clearly the top pain point.

Prioritizing

The PM, lead developer, and I used a prioritization matrix to evaluate the value and effort of the user sessions. The problem of not being able to find the product was one of the issues we decided to prioritize building.

Evaluating current flow

Current Process

Why was not being able to find a product such a big issue for new users?

The users always had to choose a supplier first before picking a product. The only way to select a product first was to select from the "your organization's full catalog", which was all the products from manually added suppliers. New users often did not have many suppliers added, making it difficult to find products if you didn't know which supplier to use.

I came up with the idea to create a second tab to allow for browsing packages from ALL suppliers, not just ones from your organization's suppliers.

Designing

Testing & Iterating

Prototyping

I created an interactive, high-fidelity prototype to test with our facility operations and supplier operations team who have talk to facility and supplier users frequently.

Usability testing

I created a testing plan with several questions for each of the 2 groups

Iterated Designs

Based on the usability test results, we iterated, and revised the user flow.

My developers and I worked together to implement the designs on the desktop and mobile.

Implemented Designs

Impact

Initial Feature Validation

  • When search by product was first released in an A/B test, I created a dashboard in datadog to monitor it's initial progress and watch user sessions evaluate the feature and catch any bugs.

Overall Value Derived

  • From the A/B test, we learned that Search by Product increases new user conversion by 20% at the 14-day rate and ordering volume by about 17%.
